UK Parliament Week 2018
Leader: Zoe Parker
Unit: 202nd Birmingham (St Mary Magdalene) Brownies
Region: Girlguiding Midlands
This year 20 girls and their leaders from 202 Brownies in Birmingham took part in Parliament Week 2018. They chose to take part in it because they recognised the struggles women faced in this country in the 1900’s and wanted to celebrate the achievements of all women across the globe.
Whilst planning the girls recognised that we were celebrating 100 years since women could first vote and their first choice was to invite the Queen to our celebrations. Unfortunately she was unable to attend but they became very excited when they found out that Steve McCabe our local MP would be in attendance.
They started off the evening with a wordsearch and a quiz from the Parliament pack, you could see there was lots of competition between all the Brownies. Following on from this there was an in depth discussion with Steve McCabe MP. He answered all of the girls questions. We found out his hardest decision in parliament was voting on whether the UK should go to war or not. He also spoke a little bit about Brexit and helped the girls to understand it better (it so happened there had been a vote that day in Parliament in regards to Brexit).
Whilst the Q&A session went on the girls took turns to decorate cupcakes. Once the session was over they then voted on our newest leader’s Owl name. It was a hung vote so the other three leaders in attendance also voted and a winner was declared: we now have Snowy Owl!
Overall the girls had lots of fun and gained a better insight into parliament life. They are ready for Parliament week 2019. Who knows, it might mean a trip to London?
