Beyond the UK
‘Mexican International Adventures’
I was chosen to represent Girlguiding Worcestershire on a two-week community project in Dallas, Texas and Mexico in 2010.
In Dallas, we were taken on a tour of the city. We were invited to meet some Girl Scout Troops and Chief Program Officer and we enjoyed joining the troops for a pool party and day at a waterpark.
We cooked a meal at the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas. The Ronald McDonald house provides an inexpensive place for families to stay, who have children with severe illnesses in hospital. We spent time getting to know some of the children living at the Ronald McDonald house and helped with making toiletry donations, which are used for when families move into the hospital accommodation when their child is taken ill at sudden notice.
We then travelled to Mexico. We visited Mexico City to start with and visited the Pyramids and attended a Folk Ballet evening.
We then stayed at Our Cabana, the Mexican WAGGGS World Centre, and took part in various Friendship projects including entertaining some of the local senior citizens; we helped to cook traditional Mexican food; painted and decorated traditional Mexican ceramics and crafts; and we participated in a Mexican Fiesta on the final evening!
We also went out on several day trips throughout the week in Our Cabana; we made new friends in the shared accommodation, with Girlguiding members from all over the world; and we enjoyed experiencing Mexican traditions such as new craft and games.
