Go All In with Pongo

You may have seen that 2026 is the National Year of Reading – a year to celebrate the power of stories and the joy of reading for pleasure. In partnership with the National Literacy Trust, we want every member in our region to rediscover the magic of a good book, to find out more about what they love, and boost mental health and wellbeing by reading for pleasure!

Whether you are a Rainbow exploring your first story, a Brownie baking, a Guide learning about your favourite astronaut, or a Ranger using books for activism, this pack is designed to help you “Go All In”. Remember, reading includes audiobooks – if you’re into it, read into it! Come along and meet Pongo, our gentle orangutan friend, as he helps us explore the joy of reading. He loves stories almost as much as he loves swinging in the trees, and he can’t wait to share that excitement with all of you.

All the activities in this pack can be adjusted or adapted to work better for members’ needs and preferences; audio books are just as appropriate as reading books.

White Ribbon challenge

Make a difference. Start a conversation. Be part of positive change.

Our White Ribbon challenge pack gives young people the opportunity to learn about respect, equality and how we can all help create safer communities. Through a range of engaging, age-appropriate activities, participants will explore the importance of positive attitudes and behaviours, build confidence to speak up when something doesn’t feel right, and discover how small actions can make a big impact.

Created in support of White Ribbon, this challenge encourages members to think about kindness, inclusion and respect, while learning why it is important to prevent violence against women and girls.

By completing the challenge, young people will make a meaningful pledge, take part in creative activities and become advocates for positive change in their communities.

Take the challenge. Start the conversation. Help build a future where everyone feels safe, valued and respected.

Rainbows first try

England Rugby and Girlguiding Midlands have come together to inspire girls through non-contact rugby and related activities, emphasising fun, fitness and inclusion.

We know that opportunities for sport are important to girls, who can often feel limited by perceptions of which sports are ‘for girls’. And, with women’s rugby increasing in popularity with every international tournament and grassroots game, we want to inspire the rugby players and fans of the future.

Smile

SMILE was a virtual event over World Thinking Day weekend in 2021.

Taking part in SMILE! During this time we would like each person to celebrate World Thinking Day in the following way;

S – Sleep somewhere different or in the style of a different country, maybe a hammock, or on the floor like in Japan

M – make music or a craft from another country

I – Imagine you are an explorer, where would you go? See if you can listen to one of our stories from people that have explored or make a poster about where you would love to go

L – Learn a dance from another country or learn about the animals around the world

E – Experience the culture of a county by trying the food or finding out about it

Finally, living our promise, do a good turn to make someone SMILE!

There were online sessions available but feel free to come up with your own creative ideas to meet the headings above.

I am one in 10 million

To celebrate World Thinking Day 2025, this badge pack is designed by the Girlguiding Midlands international team to help all of our members understand that they belong to a global community of guiding and a community that has over 10.8 million girls and young women from all across the world.

The pack aims to introduce you to some of the different countries where Girl Guides are located throughout the world by exploring the crafts, games, food, music and activities that are inspired by those countries.

We couldn’t possibly cover every country that belongs to WAGGGS so if you need any further inspiration, please do have a look at the WAGGGS website.

IDOT

This resource has been created through a collaboration of the Wildlife Aid Foundation and Girlguiding Midlands to support taking small actions collectively, that overall make a big impact on wildlife and our natural environment.
The Wildlife Aid Foundation (WAF) is dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned animals. Established in 1980, the charity’s veterinary wildlife hospital in Leatherhead, Surrey, deals with more than 20,000 wildlife emergencies every year. Their aim is to return every patient to the wild once they have recovered. The Foundation’s work was the focus of the popular TV series “Wildlife SOS” on Discovery’s “Animal Planet” and has now moved onto the worldwide platform of YouTube. The Founder of WAF is the environmental broadcaster and campaigner Simon Cowell MBE.
