Have you always wanted to try out Bushcraft skills, or light a fire with confidence? Do you want to teach some of those traditional skills to your unit?
This weekend will introduce you to the key skills needed to deliver Bushcraft to your unit. Activities will be structured so that you can tailor the activities to your age group and increase or decrease the challenge.
Spread over 2 days, with an opportunity to spend the night either gently swinging in a hammock under the trees, bivvying under the stars, or sleeping in your tent, you will get plenty of hands-on experience.
Saturday will cover:
- The safe use of sharp tools – bushcraft knives, axes, froes and saws
- Teaching girls to use knives safely
- Producing kindling
- Building a fire
- Sustaining a fire
- Using a Kelly Kettle to boil water
- Safety information on using Dutch ovens
- Different fire types – Camp fires, cooking fires, smores fires
- Erecting a shelter using a tarp
- Using hammocks, including pitching them and putting a tarp over them.
On the Sunday, we will take you through the full range of cooking over wood and charcoal with loads of different ideas. You will take part in activities that can be done in a unit meeting for Brownies, Guides and Rangers right up to cooking a full three course meal.
You will learn to cook without utensils, ember cook, steam, boil and bake.
By the end of the weekend, you will have confidence in delivering bushcraft activities, building, lighting and maintaining a fire for cooking on, for a period of time and have experienced and tasted a wide range of cooking techniques.
No previous experience is required for this weekend and all equipment is provided. Saturday evening meal, Sunday Breakfast and a three course Sunday lunch are provided as well as hot drinks throughout the weekend.
If you have already attended one of our training days then you are welcome to attend on Saturday to refresh or to practice your skills, and we can make equipment available for you.
