Become a volunteerAs it is the start of a new year you may be thinking about holidays and adventures. Last year I enjoyed an international adventure with 36 other leaders from Girlguiding Midlands when we visited Our Cabana in Mexico followed by a few days in Mexico City. This was my first international trip and now will not be my last.
I enjoyed the build up to the trip and paying in stages made it affordable. We also met as a group beforehand which was a lovely way to get to know each other, and we were put into patrols and given opportunities to choose our preferred trips and plan for Mexico.
I really felt part of a worldwide organisation being able to stay in a world centre. The weather was good and warmer than the UK, the volunteers made us all welcome and we had a full schedule of activities. Our Cabana is set in lovely grounds and the staff and volunteers have boundless enthusiasm. Our days started early but I never felt that anything was compulsory and there was respect for all individuals and a desire to meet our needs.
The craft sessions and cookery sessions were great fun and an opportunity to learn about the culture. We visited amazing places with spectacular scenery. I am sure there are many people who visit Mexico and never go far from their all inclusive 4 or 5 star all- inclusive hotels. Mexico City was very busy as it was festival time, but being with a group made us feel safe and the tour guide ensured we made it to all the places we needed to go. Watching the wrestling was great fun and the masks sold by vendors outside were tempting as I am known for a bit of dressing up!
The dormitories at our Cabana were comfortable and I loved a chance to sit in the sun by the swimming pool. The challenges were great fun and throughout the week there was much to do and so much laughter.
The experience made me feel so special being a member of Girlguiding. It was a unique experience that I gladly shared on Facebook with my friends and have talked about since. I made new friends and enjoyed new experiences. We encourage that for the girls- so should do it for ourselves too.
