What is peer education?
Peer education is Girlguiding’s innovative programme that trains members aged 14 to 25 to empower themselves and others to make a difference in the lives of girls throughout the UK.
Peer educators help Brownies, Guides and Rangers explore important topics which they might not normally cover in unit meetings.
Peer educators run fun, safe and challenging sessions which are developed with expert partners.
What topics are available?
- Safe the world – gives members the opportunity to understand, identify and take action against unsafe behaviours. (Brand new for 2022!)
- Breaking free – gives girls the tools to challenge gender stereotypes. Developed with expert academics, CEOs and charities.
- Think resilient – gives Brownies, Guides and Rangers the tools to build their mental well-being. Developed with Young Minds
How do I get involved?
- Request a session for your unit – fill out the session request survey on the Girlguiding website or get in touch with your County Coordinator.
- Become a peer educator – keep an eye on the Girlguiding Midlands website for the latest training weekends.
- Become a county coordinator – get in touch with your county commissioner to check availability and find out if you can assist.
What does a typical session look like?
Before the session, your peer educator will be in touch with you to ask you a few logistical questions. The session will be made up of lots of different activities which can be tailored to suit your unit dynamics. These activities vary and can include games, discussions and craft. Unit leaders will need to be present during the session to ensure the smooth running of the session and to support the peer educator. All sessions count towards UMA minutes!
What is involved in being a peer educator?
To become a peer educator you will need to attend a weekend training which will consist of 1 day’s skills training and 1 day’s topic training. Once you have completed the weekend, you will be able to attend Brownies, Guides and Ranger units to deliver sessions in your trained topic. When you are a trained peer educator, you can attend further online trainings on the different topics. Keep an eye on the Girlguiding Midlands website for upcoming training weekends.
Most importantly… do I get a badge?
Of course!! All participants in peer education sessions can purchase the topic badges from the Girlguiding shop. Peer educators will also receive Bronze, Silver and Gold badges for their number of sessions delivered.
