Become a volunteer2020: The year of having a virtual social life, including in guiding (plus a Guiding Quiz to try, taken from my last Guiding social!)

This year has definitely been the year of having a virtual social life. From Microsoft Teams meetings for work, to Zoom socials toa weekly quiz via Skype with friends. And Guiding has been no different, with units meeting online becoming a norm for many, or weekly challenges posted on Facebook groups.
One thing I have particularly enjoyed as a volunteer has been the online socials with other volunteers and leaders. I have taken part in a few guiding socials in the last few months including the Midlands 18 to 30 social with badge blanket bingo (shout out to Kimberley’s blog on this, complete with pictures), Staffordshire’s Gin and Jamas social during Volunteers week, a leaders social as part of Staffordshire’s ‘Wild Night In’ virtual camp (I learnt I knew more about survival in the wild than I thought) and our Division quiz night too.
It has been lovely to join events from the comfort of my own home, see other volunteers (and often their lovely pets too!) and have a catch up. If you are thinking of organizing or taking part in a virtual social I would definitely encourage it, it is lovely to see and chat with people that you might not have time to chat to as much as you might like whilst at camp, events or meetings and all without going through the front door or having to organize a venue etc.
One popular event during lockdown and the last few months has definitely been a quiz! I now have an account on Kahoot (but don’t ask me too much about it as I am still navigating my way around!), taken part in lots of different rounds (from rounds on ‘Is it Ikea furniture or a Greek God’ to ‘Which country does this McDonald’s food come from’) and acquired lots of random knowledge (did you know, in 2012 a world record was set for most cupcakes eaten in 6 minutes with-72 cupcakes, and I thought Brownies demolished cake quickly!).
