Being an advocate

The Girlguiding Advocate Panel is a group of 20 Girlguiding members, aged 16 to 25, from across the UK and Northern Ireland, who are the spokespeople for the organisation. We represent all members sharing their views, opinions and issues that matter to them with change makers.

We meet politicians like Maria Caulfield and Steve Barclay to discuss mental health, period poverty and other issues important to Girls and Young Women,  attend events to promote campaigns including Dove’s online safety campaign which Girlguiding is a partner of, which I got to speak about my own experiences of social media on my mental health.

We also do interviews for radio, TV, newspapers and magazines, attend political party conferences and the British Youth Council annual conferences where we put motions and amendments forward for their manifesto. We are also actively involved in the development of the Girls’ Attitude Survey, Girlguiding’s annual survey of girls and young women from across the UK and Northern Ireland. We help develop the questions and then promote the report each year.

The role lasts 2 years, comes with training opportunities, monthly meetings and social opportunities too. I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing and inspiring people, made some awesome friends, attended some great events and shared both my own experiences and those of girls and young women from across the UK with people who can make change happen.
