Innocent Big Knit

Your Hub entry – Esther Pilgrim

Every year since 2003 Innocent smoothies have teamed up with Age UK for a ‘big knit’ to raise money for them. How it works is that volunteers knit tiny wooly hats and send them in. These are then worn by some of the innocent smoothie bottles. For each of these bottles sold, 25p is donated to Age UK https://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/big-knit

I have been knitting for several years now, and after sorting out my wool I was looking for a project to help use up some of my huge bag of odds and ends. After a bit of searching I found the innocent smoothie project and decided to take part. On and off over the last few months I have been knitting these little hats, setting myself the challenge of making one each of the knitted patterns that innocent provide https://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/big-knit/knitting-patterns

I excluded any that were crochet or needed double-pointed needles as I don’t currently have that equipment and the only granny square I’ve ever attempted to crochet turned out more like a granny-splat!

I have enjoyed making these hats and am pleased with how they turned out (the strawberry and lion are my favourites). Although I have missed the deadline for this year’s big knit I will keep my hats safe and have signed up for the Age UK newsletter so that I will know when contributions for the next campaign start. At that point I can take the hats into my local Age UK store for them to start their journey raising money to help provide support for older people. As hats can be re-donated after they are bought, there’s no telling how much my set of hats could eventually raise!
