‘Girlguiding and University’

I was a rainbow unit leader in Herefordshire when I moved to Cardiff for University back in 2018.

I can tell you now, it was quite the adventure!

The differences between the two locations are quite stark, but in a good way. I found Cardiff to be a busy, vibrant city, full of energy and culturally expansive, whereas it felt small and homely in Herefordshire. University was a fantastic experience for myself, though what I enjoyed most was having independent time to explore my own interests. I stepped out of my comfort zone to join a Guide unit as an occasional helper and I honestly loved it.

The university provided some support with volunteering funding, I started my Gold DofE and I worked on more qualifications. I never imagined how much I’d get out of this, when I initially just thought that I’d spend a few hours helping a local group.

I think it’s important to remember for anyone interested in moving elsewhere or starting university, that the Girlguiding community is still active, enthusiastic and thriving – I was over the moon that I was able to continue my involvement as a leader.

For example, the Guide Leaders invited me to become an assistant leader on an international trip, to take 20 Guides to Sangam in India! By far this has been my favourite memory and I am so grateful that I could share this experience with the young people, many of whom had never been on a plane.

Overall, the move and decision to rejoin Girlguiding was a positive experience, allowing me to grow both academically and as a leader. I am now back home and starting new opportunities within Girlguiding Midlands. I never met anyone else who moved to university and remained in the Guiding scene, so I’d love to hear their experiences!
